Roost Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector review

Leak detectors? Might not be one of the first things you would think of as having a flooded market? or maybe it would, but infact thats just what there is which is pretty ironic really. Most of the gadgets are based on the same kind of design, they have 2 probes that set off an alarm when they are connected to water so if you were going to bring out a new model it would be pretty hard to find one that could rise above the others but i think i have found one that has done just that.

The Roost Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector costs about £40 GBP or about $50 USD which is a reasonable price to pay for having a water leak detector i think considering the cost of the repairs if you did have a water leak and at this price its about the middle of the market but it has features that work better than the high end models

It has a sensor that runs around the base of the unit in a loop and can also track other things such as humidity and temperature so you can see how they go over the past 24 hours

The sensors on the bottom also are not on the direct base of the detector so they wont set off a false alarm like if you had it in an area that had moisture on the surface, which is a good feature to have if you wanted to use it say in a bathroom where the sides could get wet from a shower or condensation.

One of the best things about this device though is that it has a WiFi connection so you can monitor it with your smart phone if you download an app to monitor it which to me is good as you can see what is happening even if you are not at home and it can alert you if you do have a water leak

One downside to the device though is that it is not water tight, it has speaker holes on the top of it and if any water gets in those it can set the device off for ages after even if you manage to dry the thing out. This also means that if the device was in a serious flood and went under the water line it would be pretty useless as it would cut out so i wouldnt use it for that kind of senario but for keeping an eye on your water pipes it is an ideal device.

For its price and the fact it has WiFi i think its a really good buy and a great deal if you are worried about leaks anywhere in your bathroom or kitchen or in fact anywhere else that you may have water pipes where you think they could leak.
